In the footsteps of the Romans
The Gallo-Roman theatre at Alba-la-Romaine, discovered in the early 19th century, is an integral part of the archeological complex of the ancient city of Helviens, capital of the Gallic people. The site, which has been the subject of numerous excavation campaigns, reveals an impressive theatre with a capacity of between 3,000 and 5,000 spectators, illustrating the importance of this city under Roman influence. Its typical structure, comprising stone tiers, a stage and an orchestra, is a testament to roman entertainment architecture.
Today, the site is open to the public and offers guide tours, cultural events and historical re-enactements, making it one of the Ardèche's leading heritage showcase. The adjacent museum displays objects fund during the excavations, offering a fascinating insight into the daily lives of the Helviens. The theatre is not only a historical relic, but also a living place, steeped in the culture and history of region.
