Experience

The culture around salt and salt marshes has become inextricably linked to the Charente landscape, and is now a symbol of Charente-Maritime heritage.

One of the world’s most refined salts

The Vendée monks on the Ile-de-Ré began using the salt marshes during the 12th century, but salt cultivation reached its peak in the 19th century. About a hundred salt workers still work the salt ponds. This piece of Ile-de-Ré culture is also a source of exceptional biodiversity that you can explore on foot or by bike.
