The Hossegor Lake
Discovery
Born of the ramblings of a capricious river made famous by writers, the Hossegor lake is one of the jewels of the Côte d'Argent.
A multi-faceted lake
This lake, which breathes to the rhythm of the ocean's tides and is surrounded by magnificent villas, gardens and parkland, is open to water sports enthusiasts (paddle, pirogue, sailing) as well as walkers. And for those with a sweet tooth, you can enjoy oysters in the huts while admiring the sunset.
A little history...
In the middle of the 19th century, Napoleon III decided to connect it to the ocean to make it "the hunting pond of the port of Capbreton" to prevent it silting up. Barely open to the sea, the basin expanded and its ecosystem became incredibly rich: marine plants, shellfish, gilthead bream, mussels etc... This nature reserve also enabled small craftsmen to make a living from its benefits, thanks to oyster farming, seaweed and shellfish. In the 19th century, oyster beds sprang up all around the lake, adding to the tourist appeal of this remarkable site.
