A nature reserve for the region's flora and fauna

Situated at the heart of the double tombolo on the Giens peninsula, the Pesquiers salt marsh takes its name from its original vocation as a fishery. In the past, the double tombolo enclosed a single pond that was exploited as an active fishing ground on behalf of royalty. Later, two of the site's fishermen managed to sell the fishery at auction and took over the entire property to start processing the lagoon. Gradually, the entire lagoon was developed into a salt works of a size and operating method that was conducive to industrial salt production.

Today, the Salin des Pesquier is a coastal wetland covering some 550 hectares, home to a wide variety of natural habitats and exceptional biodiversity. The natural landscapes it offers contribute to the exceptional character of the Presqu'île de Giens.
In 2023, a soft path called "Le Pas de Saunier" was opened at the Salin des Pesquiers: a 1.6 km natural trail allows walkers and cyclists to wander around this exceptional natural site.
